ReplyDeleteI am a full time MBA student at the U this year focusing on entrepreneurship. I have a BS in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Wisconsin, Madison, where I was involved with a student design team, an equipment manager for the Badgers Football program, and a part-time machinist/fabricator in a research lab. I worked for Harley Davidson as an engineer for 8 months during school, and Waukesha Engine for a summer. After graduating I moved to Roseau, Minnesota to work for Polaris Industries developing and designing ATVs, Snowmobiles, Motorcycles, and Watercraft. After 6 years in a variety of roles at Polaris I left to pursue my MBA and live in the great state of Montana. I graduate this May (as long as Dr. Braun passes me!) and look forward to a career in small business and consulting (I hope).

ReplyDeleteThe trip to Omaha and Kansas City proved to one that was incredibly valuable and meaningful. I feel very fortunate to have been part of such a once in a lifetime experience. There were many highlights to the trip, such as the Kansas City Board of Trade and The Federal Reserve. However, Warren stole the show and lived up to the high expectations that were set forth once I learned of this opportunity.
ReplyDeleteDespite all the amazing and insightful things that Warren had to say, there was one simple thing that he did, that most likely went unnoticed to many, that caught my attention and left me in awe at this unique man. Warren was talking about yet another multi-billion dollar deal that he had conducted. He then referenced an odd percentage, and then without even the slightest hesitation, he gave that percentage in a dollar amount of hundreds of millions of dollars. I was immediately impressed by his amazing ability to due complex, and very large calculations in his head. I have always enjoyed doing calculations in my head, and I know many others that do as well. However, when the numbers start to grow, these calculations tend to take more time to do. For Warren, there was not even a blink of an eye. This demonstrates not only his amazing ability with numbers, but also his familiarity with numbers that most cannot even comprehend. Although simple, I found this to be very impressive, and at that moment, I knew I was in the presence of a very special person!

ReplyDeleteI am a Missoula native with a B.A. from the University of Oregon. I am now a full time MBA student focusing on international business and will graduate in May. I currently work at the Montana World Trade Center as a research assistant with a specialty in the manufacturing sector. After graduation I hope to work in an international trade or development position with ties to Latin America. I enjoy traveling, being active, reading, and, of course, cheering on our Montana Grizzlies!
The Warren Buffett trip went from great to amazing because of the people involved in it. Some of the best times for me were spent riding in a 13-person van between Kansas City and Omaha that seated ten of my peers. The conversation was always enjoyable, as was the company. Sometimes an experience can be marred by a group setting, but this was not the case at all. I felt that this experience has made this group of the class of 2011 MBA/MAAC students significantly closer, and for that I am very thankful!
ReplyDeleteGetting to hear Warren Buffett speak was interesting, and I thought that he made some very valid points about the unfairness of our tax system (aka, it helping the wealthy become more wealthy and burdening the poor) and how philanthropy in the United States is so much more common in the middle class, and not, at one would think, the upper class. He spoke of the middle class disappearing because the distance between the poor and wealthy has steadily grown for the last 40 years. These are not things that one would think a billionaire would think or talk about, but Warren Buffett did, and with ease. I think that Mr. Buffett's coverage of these topics this was one of the most important things that I took away from this experience. It shows that he is a down-to-earth, modest man, and that he, unlike some billionaires, has seen the injustice and problems of the capitalistic system that he has made so much money on.
I am happy that I got the opportunity to go on this trip with my peers, Simona and Mike. What a great experience!
